About Lancer
Lancer is an AI agent for Upwork. It watches the job feed against criteria you set, judges which jobs actually fit you, writes a tailored proposal for each one, and submits it ā so the work of finding and applying to jobs stops eating your week.
What we do
Upwork rewards being early and being relevant, and both are hard to sustain by hand. A good job goes up, it collects proposals within the hour, and the freelancer who was asleep, on a call, or halfway through another proposal never sees it. The usual answers ā checking the feed all day, hiring a virtual assistant to bid, or wiring together a workflow tool and a spreadsheet ā trade one problem for another.
Lancer closes that loop end to end. Campaigns filter the live Upwork feed on the things that actually predict a good engagement: budget, the client's spend history, their hire rate, their review record, category and region. Every job that survives the filters goes through an AI suitability pass that reads the post the way a person would, and catches the ones that technically qualify but clearly are not a fit. What is left gets a proposal written from a knowledge base you author ā your positioning, your work, your rates ā plus answers to the job's screening questions. Then it submits, boosts where boosting is worth it, and tracks the replies in an inbox.
You stay in control throughout. Proposals can be reviewed before they go out, campaigns can be paused, and every decision the AI makes is inspectable and tunable.
Who we build for
Lancer is used by more than 400 freelancers and agencies, across development, design, marketing, recruiting and data work. Three shapes of customer recur:
- Solo freelancers who want the hours back and would rather spend them on client work than on proposals.
- Agencies scaling outreach across several Upwork accounts, where consistency and coverage matter more than any single proposal.
- Teams in thin niches ā recruiting, specialised engineering ā where the jobs are few enough that missing one is expensive.
Their results are published with names and numbers on the case studies page rather than summarised into a claim.
How we think about automation
Upwork prohibits bots that mass-apply, and rightly so ā they make the marketplace worse for everyone in it. Lancer is built the other way around: fewer proposals, each one actually addressed to the job, sent from your account with your voice and your evidence. The filtering exists so you apply to less, not more.
That principle shows up in the product as guardrails rather than advice. Writes that would quietly degrade lead quality ā stripping budget floors, removing client-quality filters ā are rejected by the server unless you explicitly opt in, and the same rules apply whether a human or an agent is making the change.
Built to be driven by agents
Most of Lancer is operable by an AI agent rather than a person. A Model Context Protocol server exposes campaigns, the knowledge base, cover letters, the inbox and analytics as tools, alongside the policy documents that describe how Lancer is meant to be run ā so an agent connected to it behaves like an operator who has been trained, not one improvising. A REST API and webhook deliveries cover the bidding loop for teams who would rather run their own decision logic.
